Today students learned the difference between drug addiction and drug abuse. Case studies were given to groups while the went through clinical definitions to determine if the case was of abuse or addiction.

We are starting with a warm-up everyday to help review basic concepts of science in preparation for THE BIG TEST.

POP QUIZ WEDNESDAY!

Yeasty Beasty Burps!
Students investigated the amount of Carbon Dioxide produced by yeast that has been fed sugar. Some were more productive than others - I guess reading and following the directions are two different things.

They also had time to finish the crossword and word search from last night. It was due at the END of the DAY!

Mass of an egg - place in vinegar overnight
Diffusion
Cut carrot - place 1/2 in tap water the other 1/2 in salt water

Let both set-ups "do their magic" overnight!

8th Grade
Kids looked at the phase changes of several different substances - oobleck, dry ice, and "heat solution" packs.
Just because somethings turns solid (freezes), doesn't mean that it is cold.
Oobleck, is it a solid or a liquid? Regardless, corn starch + water = FUN (and a mess)
Dry Ice - what is sublimation? Why did the spoon sing? What made the candle go out?

Homework
8th graders going to Denver with Mrs. Brady - Copy THESE notes on a separate piece of paper.
(Kids NOT going) - we will do these notes in class on Tuesday.

They had their vocabulary pop-quiz today. Kids learned that if they did their definitions, they were able to earn a higher grade - for some a 100%! Any time kids are given a new unit vocabulary list, they have the opportunity to write them down, make a definition, and write a sentence using the word. IF they do this - THEN, they get to use this assignment ON THE TEST!!! Who wouldn't want the answers in front of them during a test?! Crazy, huh?!

There should be a picture of the new organism drawn and a description of what makes it a living thing - identifying how the 6 characteristics of living things are known to them. How do they reproduce, how do they get energy, how do they grow and develop.

7th graders started to take notes on Cells and Living Things. We discussed the ISN self-reflection template which they will be responsible to complete for this new unit. It is a written reflection of their unit and notebook.

8th Graders started taking notes on Density, Mass and Volume.
Their question of the day is to think about why a diet coke floats while a regular coke can sinks?

Also, I introduced them to an organism called sewer lice. They work to clean sewage which will then make the liquid potable. We are currently waiting to see if this will become potable (drinkable).....maybe tomorrow.....that way we are 100% positive that it is clean!

We had a rough day with Lab Write-ups being completed from this weekend. NO ONE in 1st period completed their homework. They took their data in their ISN, but failed to transfer it over to their lab write up.

They also took their first test, today. They can log on to Quia at home and see what they didn't understand.

Dissolving Gummy Bears!

Students had their first attempt at a lab in science today. Some dissolved and some didn't. It was definitely a lesson in: 1. listening to directions, 2: taking observations and 3: sometimes labs don't work out the way we wanted.

For Monday students need to do an official lab write up. This is the equivalent to a Final Essay Draft for English. It will be graded for grammar and spelling. There should be a data table and more advanced students should be able to make that table into a graph knowing that the Dependent Variable (time) goes on the Y-axis and the Independent Variable (color, water temperature, or size) of gummy bear goes on the X-axis.
